Beautiful Varanasi

Ganges River

  • The Ganges is a sacred river to Hindus along every fragment of its length. All along its course, Hindus bath in its waters, paying homage to their ancestors and to their gods by cupping the water in their hands, lifting it and letting it fall back into the river; they offer flowers and rose petals and float shallow clay dishes filled with oil and lit with wicks (diyas). On the journey back home from the Ganges, they carry small quantities of river water with them for use in rituals (Ganga jal, literally water of the Ganges).

Varanasi Ghats

  • One of the oldest cities of India, Banaras acts as an important religious center. The numerous bathing ghats (steps) along the bank of the Ganges attract huge crowds of pilgrims. In Varanasi Ghats are man made embankments of stone, centuries old and built to face east towards the rising Sun. Originally built as access to the river for pilgrims seeking a holy dip to perform sacred rites and religious ceremonies, some sections of the ghats are dedicated for cremation rites. The 8 kms stretch of the river in Varanasi has 84 Ghats and over 300 temples dedicated to various Hindu deities.

Kashi Vishvanath Ji Temple

Varanasi is also called as Kashi and Shiva is considered as the ruler of the universe. Vishwanath refers to the term ruler of the universe.

  • Sarnath is a famous place in Varanasi and it is the destination for cultures like Hindu, Buddha and Jain. Sarnath is the place where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma then Buddhist Sangha has originated as well as came into existence because of the enlightenment of Kondanna. It is situated atleast 13 Km to north-east of Varanasi. There is a village 1 km away from the Sarnath known as the Singhpur where Shreyansanath was born. He was known as the eleventh Tirthankara of Jainism. This is why the sarnath is also an important pilgrimage site for Jainism.

Sadhus

  •  Varanasi is the most holy Hindu city and the spiritual home of India’s sadhus, or holy men. They are revered by Hindus as representatives of the gods and sometimes worshiped as gods themselves.
